The end of summer always makes me feel a little lonely.  My babies are still little and don't have to plan for "back to school" yet I still feel like something is making me lonesome...every year.  So this year we have been staying extra, extra busy.  Lots of baking/cooking/eating to make ourselves feel cosy.  Then after the eating there's been lots of exercising!  Seriously...

So here are some pictures of what we've been up to lately;

Starting with blueberries!  I think we may have gone a little overboard when we went picking.  The baby eats them for every meal.  I hope that's ok!

This pie looks really good.  And as it bakes it's smelling pretty tasty.  Recipe from here.  Although I made a few tweaks.  The crust is super crumbly so I'll let you know how it comes out.

Our little blueberry monster.  I wonder if that's why her eyes are so blue :)
Moving on to figs.  I've never cooked with them before but we were looking for a summery dinner and this was perfect!  Whole wheat pasta, figs, goat cheese and spinach.  Too good!
We've also been making our own buttons and beads.  The beads are for Hazel to string.  She's very much enjoying making her own jewelry, however that usually means that I do most of the stringing.  Her little fingers are still a little small.  And the buttons we are going to use in some fall clothing that I plan to whip up for the girls soon.

So here we are just trying to stay busy and have fun.  Maybe some of my lonely feeling this year is the fact that we are so far from home.  I wish everyday that I could see my family whenever I want, just like before.  But we have to take what we've been dealt!  And a promotion is a good thing...right?

PS...I am so new to blogging...does anyone have any insight into why the first two pics in this post can be made larger but the ones to follow could not be?  Weird!

PPS I love comments so if you read this will you please make a quick comment that you were here?  Cool!

Gratitude Sunday

Linking up with Wooly Moss Roots for Gratitude Sunday.
Last week was the first time I have written (typed) down what I am grateful for during the week.  It was wonderful and it definitely had an impact on the week to follow.  I felt as though I was seeking to make things more pleasant for myself and others throughout the week.  So here is my list for this week...join in if you like!
An older picture
Feeling extra grateful for this guy.  I don't know what I would do without him.  I was really looking forward to having him all to myself (and the girls) this weekend.
What a great weekend it was!  We did some sight seeing, swimming, cooking, blueberry picking.  Oh so much fun.
This little girl of my mine is just the sweetest.  None of us had ever been blueberry picking before.  She understood exactly what to do.  Pick them and eat them as fast as possible!
Excited about all the blueberries we did pick.  We made muffins today and probably will do pie tomorrow and we'll freeze a bit too!
Pleased that I was able to have some time to myself to finish my color wheel quilt!  Yay!  All washed and dried too.
Looking forward to my next sewing project...not sure what it will be though.
Loving this weather.  Dryer is better.
The last two nights. Cold enough to bury under the blankets and wake up feeling completely refreshed.

Happy to be getting the photography "bug" back.  Not sure why I ever put my camera away but I'm excited to experiment with it again.
I hope you all have a wonderful week!  Leave a link to your Gratitude Sunday if you would like.  I would love to read it!

Color Wheel

WIP Wednesday:

Today I am linking up to Freshly Pieced for work in progress Wednesday.  So far I have only browsed through all the wonderful patchwork that people have linked to. Today I am finally close to finishing a project that has now taken about 4 months.

This is the color-wheel quilt from Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson.  I had been wanting to try this quilt for about a year when I finally got the courage.  And with the great instructions it really was not too difficult.  I have only made three quilts previous to this so I consider myself a newbie.  But I am so obssessed.  I have a whole quilting room in our new rental (more on that in a moment).

So the last bit I have to do is the binding...which I never enjoy doing.  I don't like deciding on fabric for the binding and I especially don't like binding by hand.  So if I ever get around to picking out the binding I have decided I'm machine sewing it on.  Cheating?  I don't think so...

The center of this quilt seems a bit bunchy with all the thread from the intersecting quilting.  And my wedges of white are not all equal.  But I have to say I love, love this quilt.  It is very soft.  Not too big, only 56 inches square.

The back, sorry no one was home besides the baby, and she can't help hold the quilt up! Also very soft.  So any suggestions for binding?  The quilt pictured in the book has white binding.  Not really exciting but I guess keeps the focus on the color wheel itself.

And now for a peek into my horribly messy sewing room.  Keep in mind we just moved here a few months ago and I have not yet had the time (motivation) to organize.  I need cheap shelves for sure.
The lighting in here is wonderful but the whole house has these thick drapes that keep the light out.  Yuck!

My Singer, I love this machine.  I had an old cranky Kenmore from my m-i-l but my hubby promised that if we relocated to Canada he would buy me a new machine.  It's the first thing when bought for the new house!

And finally a picture of a bit of fabric mess!  This homely couch was left in the house when we moved in.  Hopefully it will go soon.  And maybe I'll have some shelving in it's place!  I can't stand having all of my fabric thrown around like this.  I'll blame it on the kids!

Gratitude Sunday

Today I am going to try to link up with Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots.  I tried once already today so this is my last attempt!  Ahh!!  Anyhow Taryn has a great little blog.

Loving my butterfly bush at home (in Maine), wish I had been there longer to enjoy it!

So happy that our long drive back to Canada is over.  I don't think we'll be going home to visit again anytime soon.  Too tough with babies.

But so happy that I made it to the wedding.  I love seeing my family and this was a great day!

Little, sweet Violet even had a wonderful time at the wedding.  (Walking with grammie).

Glad that Vi is now able to walk on her own.  Makes life so much easier.

Pleased to see the girls doing a little more playing together and less fighting.  I am so tired of hair pulling!

So proud that I have finally (FINALLY!) gotten back into running.  I need it badly!  Plus it wouldn't hurt to shed those last 20!! ahem, pregnancy pounds!

And finally thrilled that we found our own wild blackberries in our Canadian yard.  We are off to bake something yummy!

The Big Move

My family and I are from the beautiful state of Maine in the US.  I have never lived any place other than Maine.  But my husband worked hard for a huge promotion so we just recently moved 10 hours north in Canada.  I never imagined moving someplace even colder than where I had lived my entire life.  I didn't want to go...oh there were tears.  Not just from the children but big, big tears from myself.  The one thing that got me to leave this beautiful beach was that we were going to be living in a house about four times larger than what we own in Maine!

So we have been in Canada now for a few months.  Although, I have been home to visit about four times already.  A ten hour drive with two little girls, ugh!  So as fall/winter approaches we will probably not be driving home to visit as much.  Which means I have decided to do some decorating.

We'll start with Hazel's room since I want her to be as comfortable as possible here, without missing home too much!  This house that we are living in has not been renovated and it was built in the 80s so you can just imagine the style, which is not my style at all!  Here are pictures of Hazel's room.  We can't remove the horrible, wrinkly carpet or shiny silvery wallpaper because we're just renting for two years. But any tips on where to start would be great!

She does have the best view in the house!
Just look at that nasty carpet (at least it's clean now)

Basically all that's in the room now is her little antique bed and some scary
looking drapes!

I'm thinking a fun bedroom like this.  If it were my room I would choose this.  But without all the money in the world I certainly can't afford either.  So we are going to do our best, thrifting is my thing and hopefully we'll make one little girl happy (and not so homesick).  Check back for the reveal pictures!

Day 1

Is anyone out there?  I've been contemplating starting a blog for a long time.  But I kept thinking...why would anyone want to read yet another "mom" blog.  Trust me, I love a good mom blog.  In fact I read too many each day.  But I started thinking that maybe this blog isn't about what I am offering to others in the form of reading material.  But instead this blog is about what I get from it.  I look forward to looking back at what I hope to be a bit of a diary.

And so it begins...I have two daughters.  I chose today as the day to start blogging, mainly because it was a horrible day!  So why not document it?

This little darling is Hazel...she just turned three, my oldest of two girls.  And just as we were getting ready to sit down to dinner, she decided to umm, how do I put this nicely so you'll continue to read more?  She wiped poop all over her bedroom.  I mean all over one wall, the windows and oh yes all over the carpet.  Oh she said it was an accident of course...but what should I believe?  She has never in her little life done anything like it before!

And just as this was happening the second little darling (Violet) who just turned one, decided that she had to go to bed at that very moment.

And because of that the store was closed by the time we were able to get out for a carpet cleaner!  Oy!

So that's day 1 for you.  I swear the blog will become a more interesting read.  I feel better all ready!
